5. Public research background of the ingredients
The notes below summarise published research on the individual ingredients. The study subject is the ingredient or a preparation containing it, not the finished COEK product.
Coenzyme Q10 (50 mg per capsule)
A prospective randomised controlled trial conducted in China enrolled 186 young women with diminished ovarian reserve and poor prognosis (POSEIDON group 3), randomised to 60 days of CoQ10 pretreatment or no pretreatment, with 169 evaluated (76 intervention / 93 control). CoQ10 pretreatment was associated with a lower dose of ovulation-induction medication, higher peak estradiol, more oocytes retrieved and more good-quality embryos (p < 0.05); the proportion of cycles cancelled for poor embryo development was lower in the intervention group (8.33% vs 22.89%, p = 0.04). The study reported higher clinical pregnancy and live birth rates per transfer and per complete cycle in the intervention group, but these did not reach statistical significance. The design was open-label, the study article was single-ingredient CoQ10, and the population was low-prognosis IVF-ICSI patients with embryo-related endpoints.
Soy isoflavones (60 mg per capsule)
A human intervention study in perimenopausal women used a before-and-after self-controlled design, measuring serum FSH, LH, PRL and E2 to examine how soy isoflavones relate to relevant indices and symptoms. A further review classified "active molecules against female reproductive ageing" and their mechanisms, in which plant-derived isoflavones are among the molecules discussed.
Chasteberry (80 mg fruit powder per capsule)
Chasteberry (Vitex agnus-castus) has dedicated reviews of its pharmacology and clinical indications in relation to the female reproductive system; a separate review covers the pharmacological activity and toxicology of Vitex negundo. These publications survey the research status of the plant extract.
Angelica sinensis (100 mg per capsule)
Angelica is a traditional plant used both as food and medicine. Reviews systematically cover its chemical constituents, pharmacological effects and quality markers, including the volatile oil (such as ligustilide), organic acids and polysaccharides; another review focuses on angelica and angelica herb-pairs.
Astragalus (100 mg per capsule)
The chemical constituents and pharmacological effects of astragalus have been systematically reviewed, with the immunomodulatory activity of astragalus polysaccharides among the main topics. A further study combined network pharmacology, molecular docking and in-vitro experiments to explore targets relevant to polycystic ovary syndrome mechanisms.
Pomegranate (70 mg per capsule)
The chemical constituents and pharmacological activity of pomegranate have been reviewed, with polyphenols such as ellagic acid and punicalagin among the key actives discussed; further reviews and focused studies cover pomegranate nutrients and mechanisms relevant to inflammation.
Saffron (50 mg per capsule)
The pharmacology of saffron has been reviewed. In addition, a randomised double-blind controlled trial examined a saffron freeze-dried effervescent tablet in primary dysmenorrhoea (qi stagnation and blood stasis pattern) in 60 participants. The trial article was a single-ingredient saffron tablet. The product label states that pregnant and breastfeeding women should not use the product.
BioPerine® black pepper extract (6.6 mg per capsule)
Piperine, the alkaloid in black pepper, is a widely studied bioavailability enhancer. Reviews trace its development from isolation and identification to formulated products, and describe the mechanisms by which it improves drug bioavailability. The product label states that the black pepper extract used is BioPerine® from SABINSA, USA.
